Science Diplomacy in the Global South — An Introduction

As co-editors of a special section in Science and Public Policy, this introductory article maps the landscape of science diplomacy (SD) in the Global South. The authors argue that while the concept of SD emerged primarily from North Atlantic contexts, an increasing number of countries in Latin America, Africa, South Asia, and beyond have embraced it — adapting its logic to their own development priorities, governance needs, and geopolitical circumstances. The article highlights deep structural asymmetries in global scientific production and cooperation and calls for a more inclusive and equitable understanding of SD that goes beyond dominant Northern narratives. It situates the special section as a contribution to expanding both the geographic scope and the intellectual diversity of SD scholarship.
