This concentration area encompasses a wide spectrum of topics related to technological
advancement and innovation from the viewpoint of economic analysis. It concentrates on economic concepts underlying policy targeting
(a) the origins of new technology and its market introduction (innovation);
(b) the process of technological advancement and differences between
various sectors of the economy;
(c) the dissemination of innovations within and across firms,
industries, and countries;
and (d) the impacts – economic benefits and costs – of innovation on
individual organizations and on society at large.
Indicative topics relate to the markets for technology, regulation, expenditures on and returns from research and development (R&D), industry entry and exit, industry concentration, university-industry collaboration and technology transfer, intellectual property rights, technology and employment, technology dissemination, measurement of technology and innovation, international trade, multinational corporations, global value chains, and international competitiveness.
Policy focus can extend across all sectors and technology areas also including the generation and diffusion of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, and gene-editing technologies like CRISPR; the widespread use of robotics, nanotechnology, 3-D printing, and advanced energy storage technologies; and advanced manufacturing.
